About Us

Keep Cheney Green is a group of Summerhill neighbors working to keep the north half of Cheney Field open green space and to see it become the park neighbors have asked for since 1947. We began as the Cheney Field Planning Group.
What we believe
The Olympic track should stay. The 1996 Olympic warmup track on the south half of Cheney Field is a treasure, and we are grateful to the Atlanta Track Club for restoring it.
The north half should stay green. It is where Summerhill plays and gathers, open to anyone, with no membership and no schedule. Neighbors asked to keep it that way in the 2015 Parks of Summerhill Vision Plan.
Cheney Field is part of Atlanta’s watershed. Two large sewer trunk lines run beneath it, on the old creek channels, and the City once chose its open ground for a stormwater pond.
Cheney Field is a site of real history. Neighbors asked for a park here in 1947. The field has stayed open through everything that has happened to Summerhill since.
Cheney Field is for everyone, from inside and outside the neighborhood.
How we work
We are neighbors, old and new, who care about the field and the people who use it. We want to work with Atlanta Public Schools and the City to find the right future for the field, and we value the Track Club’s work on the track. We try to get our facts right, to cite our sources, and to correct anything we get wrong.
We are surveying neighbors about what they want for Cheney Field, and we will share the results on this site.
